Displaying poetry through podcasts

April 2nd, 2008  Tagged , , ,

Recently watching the video of channel ten news discussing the ability for children to post their poems on the internet. The ability for children to do so, provides constant motivation and allows teachers to praise student achievement. Within the context of English, students are able to recognise the importance of the strands within this subject. Allow students to use such softwares as podcasts gets the students to both use their knowledge of English and learn new skills such as podcasting and recording videos. I believe that as a teacher incorporating IT into the classroom in new and interesting ways, will captivate students interests and allow all students to participate in computer work. Therefore the use of podcasts in the classroom is a great idea.

In today’s fast-paced world, I think you are right in saying that we should “allow student to use such softwares as podcasts to get the students to both use their knowledge of English and learn new skills such as podcasting and recording videos.” What better way for children to feel like they are a part of a world that is moving so quickly? By allowing children to do this, you are preparing them for a world that already is consumed with technology. I have one question though, who exactly would you get to listen to these podcasts? It is a great idea, but I’m not to sure how far it would go. If it were used solely within the classroom then I think you have a class, but I honestly wouldn’t expect many children to be listening to each other’s poetry outside of the classroom!
Another reason I think your idea is really neat, is because I am a member of the Poetry Society of South Carolina and we are in the process of trying to get our readings out on a podcast. Imagine if children in schools were able to hear great poets read their works simply through a podcast! I think it would be a great learning tool and teachers should definitely experiment with it.

I think if technology took off in student’s homes with the help of schools, parents can be involved in the podcasting and can therefore be used as a way of reporting a child’s learning. I think using podcasts in the classroom helps children reflect on their learning and generate active learning.
